Melodic Death Metal

Dark Tranquillity

Country: Sweden

Dark Tranquillity, a prominent Swedish melodic death metal band hailing from Gothenburg, holds a significant position in the Gothenburg metal scene, alongside notable acts such as In Flames and At the Gates. They have been celebrated as the patriarchs of Gothenburg metal, as recognized in the documentary “Out of Nothing: A DT Documentary,” filmed in their hometown in April 2009.

The band’s inception in 1989 saw the collaboration of current vocalist and former guitarist Mikael Stanne, along with guitarist Niklas Sundin, under the name Septic Broiler. Later, three additional members – Anders Fridén, Anders Jivarp, and Martin Henriksson – joined the lineup.

In 1990, the band recorded their demo “Enfeebled Earth,” which displayed a predominantly thrash metal-influenced style of death metal. After releasing the demo “Rehearsal December 1990,” the band adopted the name Dark Tranquillity and continued to produce various demos, including “Trail of Life Decayed” in 1991 and “A Moonclad Reflection” in 1992. These later demos marked a shift towards the more melodic facets of death metal, which would define their sound in subsequent studio releases.

In August 1993, Dark Tranquillity released their debut album, “Skydancer.” Following this, vocalist Anders Fridén left the band to join In Flames, leading guitarist Mikael Stanne to take up the mantle of lead vocalist, while Fredrik Johansson joined as the new guitarist.

The band’s journey continued with the release of their second studio album, “The Gallery,” in 1995, preceded by the EP “Of Chaos and Eternal Night.” This period is often recognized as a highlight in their career.

Further releases included the EP “Enter Suicidal Angels” in 1996 and the third album, “The Mind’s I,” in 1997. Notably, 1999 brought significant lineup changes, with Projector introducing a more diverse sound incorporating elements like piano, keyboards, and electronic components.

Following “Projector,” the band continued to evolve their sound with releases such as “Haven” in 2000, “Damage Done” in 2002, and “Character” in 2005. “Fiction” in 2007 featured the return of clean vocals and a mix of previous stylistic elements.

Dark Tranquillity’s ninth album, “We Are the Void,” was released in 2010, and the band embarked on various tours to promote it. The subsequent years saw the release of albums like “Construct” in 2013 and “Atoma” in 2016, with various lineup changes along the way.

In 2020, Dark Tranquillity released their album “Moment,” featuring singles like “Phantom Days,” “Identical to None,” “The Dark Unbroken,” and “Eyes Of The World.” This album was honored with the 2021 Grammi for Hard Rock/Metal Album of the Year.

The band has witnessed a series of lineup changes over the years, with core members Mikael Stanne and Martin Brändström remaining constant. The band’s current lineup includes Mikael Stanne on vocals and his past role as rhythm guitarist, Martin Brändström on keyboards and programming, Johan Reinholdz on rhythm and lead guitar, Christian Jansson on bass, and Joakim Strandberg Nilsson on drums.

Joey Concepcion has served as a current live member, handling lead guitar for the band. However, it’s important to note that Christopher Amott, who was previously part of the lineup, announced his departure from the band in July 2023.

Tragically, former guitarist Fredrik Johansson passed away from cancer on 25 January 2022. Additionally, Anders Jivarp and Anders Iwers left the band in August 2021, leading to Christian Jansson and Joakim Strandberg Nilsson being named as full-time band members in June 2023.
